Fly Butter Butterfly

Sometimes while walking around Hong Kong, the leaves on the ground would lift themselves off the ground and float around in the air until I realised that there was no breeze, just 98 percent humidity and that the leaves were in fact butterflies. Purple butterflies, blue butterflies, glistening butterflies, tiny pale butterflies and large drifting butterflies- Hong Kong has them all. It reminded me of how I fell in love with them in South America, reading One Hundred Years of

Wildlife of Aus

I didn’t exactly have an Australian wildlife checklist for my trip but I was hoping to see some of the classics. Kangaroos and so on. And see them I did. Sadly, I don’t have a telephoto lens so snapping wildlife has been tricky but here are some of my highlights… Swamp Wallabies that bounded up to us at various points in the trip, sometimes with Joeys in pouch! I also saw rock wallabies, redneck wallabies and many, many mobs of kangaroos. Some friendly Australian blokes point

The Wonder of Whales

Apparently Southern Pacific Humpback whales have incredible eyesight, brown eyes that can see up through the water. When they launch themselves out of the water and spin in the ai, or breach, they are thought to be checking they are travelling in the right direction. They are attracted to bright colours and are friendly enough to swim up to a boatload of tourists even when local laws insist that the boats must not motor within 100 metres of the whales. Once up close, they see

A beautiful sight upon my return to London

We were idling along, wheeling my bike and chatting. We had just left the park and it was growing dark. We thought we’d head back toward the lights and the noise of the main road. Suddenly our eyes were caught by a large frog chillin in the middle of the tarmac. As we watched in horror, the beam of headlights rounded the order, the engine revved and the wheel came speeding right past our little friend. At the point, I decided I had to rescue her. Unfortunately, all the cars o

Good Morning Fishing in Las Penitas, Nicaragua

The peace is broken by the arrival of a fishing boat. It motors up to the estuary shoreline, two men throw two anchors. Immediately, a crowd of locals gather. Men in rolled up jeans and soggy shirts begin to throw rays as large as themselves onto the beach. The slap of dead fish landing on sand fills the air. A few women sharpen their knives on rocks and slice the ray meat from their skulls. Locals, children, hotel staff, tourists, dogs and cultures alike watch. As more fish

A Relic of the Past: Eskdale Stone Circles

An hour’s walk up from the village of Boot in Eskdale Valley rests a collection of ancient stone circles. Uneven, jagged and lying almost higgledy-piggledy among the grassland, they certainly wrestle for position as one of the wildest places I’ve visited in England. Eskdale Valley in the Lake District was once covered in forest but some of the earliest settlers in Britain were responsible for stripping it of trees. These Bronze Age people also left their mark in the form of s

An English Autumn

This little blackbird was so tame, I got right up unbelievably close to her. It was such an intimate moment and no need to break out the telephoto zoom. Okay, so she might not be as flash as some of the birds with blue feathers I saw every day in Nepal but she has big eyes and I like her. It’s been two years since I’ve seen an English autumn. I feel like I’m swirling in colours every day and I love it. I intend to spend as much time as possible opting outside, painting, explo

Never been so remote

Thought I’d do a photography post to highlight some of the utterly remote aspects of where I decided it would be a good idea to live for three months! The first thing you notice is that there are mountains in every direction. And padi fields. The valley is layered into segments of watery rice plants bordered by mud walls. When the sun sets it is glorious to see it reflected in the landscape. My neighbours invited me to assist them in planting a freshly ploughed and irrigated

Wild Nepal

Last night, I opened the bedroom door to visit the toilet. I gripped my torchlight ready to face off cockroaches, spiders, mosquitoes, caterpillars, ants or grasshoppers. But, instead, I found a tiny frog leaping repeatedly up at the door. Every day, it seems, I discover some new, bizarre wonder hiding in these remote Nepalese hills. #explore #wildlife #travelwriting #outside #Photography #wanderlust #Wild #Asia #nature #adventure #Nepal

Stonehenge Summer Solstice Sunrise

Walking amongst the towering remains of Stonehenge was a profoundly spiritual (in the modern, alcohol-soaked, sense) experience. Surrounded by thousands of people and hundreds of portaloos, the site was eerily lit by floodlights. Walking closer, the blueish tint of the rocks gave way to elongated and bizarre shadows. Gradually the music grew louder. Inside the stone circle itself, (wannabe) druids formed rhythmic drum circles and the air was rent with their chants. We pushed

Living in an urban jungle: London’s green spaces

I’ve been exploring some of London’s green spaces. Enjoying the sun and the way the city seems to spring to life at this time of year (pun intended). In my photography, I always try to capture the unexpected angles that we often miss when walking around. Riding a horse up Rainbow Mountain, Peru

My tip: take the horse on the way up, whatever the cost. You do not have lungs like the locals. Admiring the view I, unfortunately did not have enough dollar to take this option and stoically ignored the calls of locals running up to offer me assistance. Horses and walkers together at the bottom The week that I ended up in Cusco ready to visit potentially the highlight of the trip, Machu Piccu, the people of Aguas Calientes pueblo decided to go on strike. This meant that I de

Jet-Ski on Lake Titicaca

Perhaps it was more touristic than tales of cargo boat adventures and hitch-hiking with scallop fishermen, but my first time on a jet-ski was no less thrilling. The best views of Lake Titicaca can be reached from the Bolivian side. The small town of Copacabana provides the perfect gateway to reach the aptly named Isla del Sol. Searing heat beats down upon the dry earth here as women with brightly patterned traditional shawls strung across their back heave loads up the steep h

On the Road: Hitch-hiking in Peru

Before I visited South America, I had never hitch-hiked. I had never really thought about it. If I had thought about it, my brain would have undoubtedly conjured up images of leery blokes and being hit over the head with a crook-lock. But suddenly discovering a lust for adventure and faced with a tight budget, the prospect seemed more appealing. At last, in Peru, I decided to brave it. I had been exploring el Parque Nacional de Paracas. I navigated the coastline of deserted,

In photos: Cargo boat up the Amazon River

Hi there! This is essentially a photo essay to describe the almost indescribable boat trip that I took up the Amazon River. I had so much time to spend gazing at the water and watching the clouds drift by. Hence the many arty, expressive close-ups I took during those four days. Read more about the actual experience here. #villages #explore #wildlife #Amazonjungle #art #selva #solotravel #Amazon #photo #lighteffects #lighting #peru #sky #unusual #river #Photography #backpacker

Don’t underestimate the shock of culture

How can I write of England when I’ve just been through my most challenging, other-worldly travel adventure yet?! When the plane touched down on English soil after three months of being away I felt a very intense cocktail of emotions. Relief and excitement mingled with a sense of loss, achievement, pride and optimism for the future flooded through me. I just sat and tried to breathe and focus on exactly the sensations running through me at that moment. Better than any high or
