The Wonder of Whales

Apparently Southern Pacific Humpback whales have incredible eyesight, brown eyes that can see up through the water. When they launch themselves out of the water and spin in the ai, or breach, they are thought to be checking they are travelling in the right direction. They are attracted to bright colours and are friendly enough to swim up to a boatload of tourists even when local laws insist that the boats must not motor within 100 metres of the whales. Once up close, they see

The Girl Who Dreams of Darkness- Poetry From Around the World

The girl who dreams of darkness Ran away From people who kept her still Went astray When we opposed her will The girl who dreams of darkness Fears consisitency And breathes the desire of pain Always reistence And long to lie down in the rain. The girl who dreams of darkness Tries to understnad Unable to express her side But only holds up her hand To the howling of the moon inside. The girl who dreams of darkness Could never explain Trapped the cultural demands And so she drai

Wild Swimming at Eastborne

Some people have never seen the sea. Returning from the landlocked nation of Nepal, the first thing I had to do was visit the seaside; marvel at the immensity, the freedom of the horizon and feel myself swept up in the waves. #explore #outdoors #seaside #Britain #coast #Photography #Eastborne #swim #freedom #peace #picnic #mindfulness #wildswimming #adventure #staywild

Stonehenge Summer Solstice Sunrise

Walking amongst the towering remains of Stonehenge was a profoundly spiritual (in the modern, alcohol-soaked, sense) experience. Surrounded by thousands of people and hundreds of portaloos, the site was eerily lit by floodlights. Walking closer, the blueish tint of the rocks gave way to elongated and bizarre shadows. Gradually the music grew louder. Inside the stone circle itself, (wannabe) druids formed rhythmic drum circles and the air was rent with their chants. We pushed

Jet-Ski on Lake Titicaca

Perhaps it was more touristic than tales of cargo boat adventures and hitch-hiking with scallop fishermen, but my first time on a jet-ski was no less thrilling. The best views of Lake Titicaca can be reached from the Bolivian side. The small town of Copacabana provides the perfect gateway to reach the aptly named Isla del Sol. Searing heat beats down upon the dry earth here as women with brightly patterned traditional shawls strung across their back heave loads up the steep h

Paracas, Peru

Sunset stroll in Paracas. So excited to be back down from the altitude after weeks of not being able to breathe properly! To see sea lions and so many sea birds. Oh, and cold water swimming :)) #wildlife #art #photographer #location #explorer #lonelyplanet #Photography #freedom #scenery #travel #paradise #sunsets #adventure #natgeotravel

Don’t underestimate the shock of culture

How can I write of England when I’ve just been through my most challenging, other-worldly travel adventure yet?! When the plane touched down on English soil after three months of being away I felt a very intense cocktail of emotions. Relief and excitement mingled with a sense of loss, achievement, pride and optimism for the future flooded through me. I just sat and tried to breathe and focus on exactly the sensations running through me at that moment. Better than any high or

La Paz

If I was to try to quantify the point I’ve reached with travel, it would be summed up in this experience. I arrived in Bolivia with no transport or accommodation plans. I had heard from several sources that Uyuni was not the place to spend the night and so I decided to book a bus out of there sharpish. I chose the route to La Paz largely because it is the longest national journey and would take me nicely up until sunrise. Despite the fact that buses in South America are cons

Travel struggles: why don’t we talk about this?

Chiloe is one of those places in which the unwitting traveller could easily get stuck. It is a quaint place, but for me, it’s charm lay in the fact that is posited the first place where I truly felt comfortable and happy to be travelling. The island of Chiloe is the kind of place that the unwitting traveller could easily get stuck. It is known for its ancient wooden churches which dot every small village or town on the island. Since many of these look more like weather beaten

Bariloche tranquillo

One of the downsides of having all the freedom that I boasted about in my last post is that it can be exhausting to decide everything for yourself. Sometimes you get it wrong. Bariloche was one such place which I misjudged and left too soon. Beside Lago Nahuel Huapi San Carlos de Bariloche is a small town located in the west of Argentina, near the border with Chile. The town is famous for its superb chocolate and surrounding alpine countryside. As soon as I touched down in th

Colonial Colonia

My trip into Uruguay began by running across the border to board the ferry just as it pulled up the gangplank. I had been delayed catching the busses towards the port and redirected to several different queues in an attempt to get a ticket. With my passport stamped, I rushed for the boat. It then proceeded to depart twenty minutes late. One day, I will get the hang of this South American timing. #explore #buildings #art #painting #solotravel #abandoned #bordercrossings #wande
