In memory of the best mum I could have asked for and who will always be in my heart. I remember her trying to teach me how to make music from a blade of grass in our south London garden. I was about ten years old and mightily impressed by her prowess on this instrument. Today, I picked some grass from near the beach in an attempt to feel closer to her. It turns out it is a lot harder than it looks. But I practiced throughout the day and, eventually, taught myself to whistle.
Venice is a city of water. It has been this way since it was established. Freshfield is a beautiful, desolate beach that backs onto woods just north of Liverpool city centre. When I visited, there were no dog-walkers or children. It was a misanthrope’s paradise, a haven from society. In winter, you can see why no one visits it. The fierce wind from the shore whips up a furious sandstorm in the dunes and attempting to scale the dunes results in being practically blinded.
