An English Autumn

An English Autumn

This little blackbird was so tame, I got right up unbelievably close to her. It was such an intimate moment and no need to break out the telephoto zoom. Okay, so she might not be as flash as some of the birds with blue feathers I saw every day in Nepal but she has big eyes and I like her. It’s been two years since I’ve seen an English autumn. I feel like I’m swirling in colours every day and I love it. I intend to spend as much time as possible opting outside, painting, explo

Stonehenge Summer Solstice Sunrise

Walking amongst the towering remains of Stonehenge was a profoundly spiritual (in the modern, alcohol-soaked, sense) experience. Surrounded by thousands of people and hundreds of portaloos, the site was eerily lit by floodlights. Walking closer, the blueish tint of the rocks gave way to elongated and bizarre shadows. Gradually the music grew louder. Inside the stone circle itself, (wannabe) druids formed rhythmic drum circles and the air was rent with their chants. We pushed

The romance of nature

These are some of my photographs taken in response to the work of a few romantic poets and writers. I processed and developed them myself. ‘Bonny bird; wheeling over our heads in the middle of the moor. It wanted to get to its nest, for the clouds touched the swells, and it felt rain coming’ Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte ‘The assent is precipitous, but the path is cut into continual and short windings… It is a scene terrifically desolate’ Frankenstein by Mary Shelley ‘And

World Photography Day: Wild London

Since today is World Photography Day, I thought I would share a series of some of my most recent photographs with you lovely viewers. And, since I tend to consider London a worldly and world-class city, these photographs will be of London. More particularly, the wilder aspects of city life. It is also International Orangutan Day but, as I have not yet been lucky enough to capture this particular creature on camera yet, you will have to make do with wild things more along the

London’s Wildest Swims

London might not be the first location you think of when deciding on your next wild swim. Surprisingly, however, there are several outdoor lidos, some of them Olympic-sized with brightly coloured changing rooms lining the sides. But if you’re looking to escape the uniform banality of these pools and find some stunning wildlife, there are three spots that will certainly excite your senses. I visited them this week to see whether London can make the cut as a ‘hot’ wild swimming

Day 29: barefoot wandering

I managed to get outside between the rain showers today and enjoy some nature. I decided to go barefoot and, with the damp grass tickling my toes, attempted to strike some incredible yoga poses. Unfortunately, I’m not an expert. After years of resisting, I’ve finally given in… and watched a YouTube beginners video. I can see plenty of benefits. It can help with muscle strengthening, balance, anxiety and depression. And it provides a fantastic way of being in the moment. Being

Day 16

I have found quite a lot of strange and exciting wildlife in Greece including Terrapins and stripy-legged shield bugs. However, this find by Hazel was probably the most spectacular. We searched the Internet to discover that it was a Hoopoe bird. It is native to Nigeria but migrates north to Europe and Asia in summer and has even been recorded as far as north as the Shetland Islands! It is also the national bird of Israel. Day 1 of 30wilddays

Today I am appreciating the birds of Paris. For a rainy grey day, there were a surprising amount. I spotted sparrows, pigeons, herons, geese, coots and mallards ducks. Also, the furry babies! They also had this fabulously efficient way of securing food for themselves. They would hang around near the bins while the tourists ate their lunches. The tourists, who had spent all lunchtime determinedly ignoring the birds and carefully not dropping crumbs, would finish and dump their
