Journey across the desert

Usually I’m a fan of overland transport. It’s easier, cheaper, more scenic and way more environmentally friendly. Often, you can just show up to the bus station, buy a ticket, hop on and you’re off. Flights involve checking in, baggage restrictions, waiting around, and, usually, at 30000 feet, a distinct lack of view. Plus, when you finally arrive, you find you’re not in the actual city, you’re still a costly taxi ride away from anywhere of interest. As it turns out, however

Sunshine Coast

I love Australian names: Great Sandy Desert, the Sunshine Coast… No one could ever wonder what they are, what they mean. There’s no etymology, no history to decode. The Sunshine Coast was formerly known as the Near North Coast and was renamed in the 1950s and 60s in an attempt to promote tourism. Cos who wouldn’t wanna visit somewhere called the Sunshine Coast? Actually many of these names are similar to Aboriginal naming systems. These associated places with aspects of the e

The Girl Who Dreams of Darkness- Poetry From Around the World

The girl who dreams of darkness Ran away From people who kept her still Went astray When we opposed her will The girl who dreams of darkness Fears consisitency And breathes the desire of pain Always reistence And long to lie down in the rain. The girl who dreams of darkness Tries to understnad Unable to express her side But only holds up her hand To the howling of the moon inside. The girl who dreams of darkness Could never explain Trapped the cultural demands And so she drai

A beautiful sight upon my return to London

We were idling along, wheeling my bike and chatting. We had just left the park and it was growing dark. We thought we’d head back toward the lights and the noise of the main road. Suddenly our eyes were caught by a large frog chillin in the middle of the tarmac. As we watched in horror, the beam of headlights rounded the order, the engine revved and the wheel came speeding right past our little friend. At the point, I decided I had to rescue her. Unfortunately, all the cars o

Good Morning Fishing in Las Penitas, Nicaragua

The peace is broken by the arrival of a fishing boat. It motors up to the estuary shoreline, two men throw two anchors. Immediately, a crowd of locals gather. Men in rolled up jeans and soggy shirts begin to throw rays as large as themselves onto the beach. The slap of dead fish landing on sand fills the air. A few women sharpen their knives on rocks and slice the ray meat from their skulls. Locals, children, hotel staff, tourists, dogs and cultures alike watch. As more fish

Wild Swimming at Eastborne

Some people have never seen the sea. Returning from the landlocked nation of Nepal, the first thing I had to do was visit the seaside; marvel at the immensity, the freedom of the horizon and feel myself swept up in the waves. #explore #outdoors #seaside #Britain #coast #Photography #Eastborne #swim #freedom #peace #picnic #mindfulness #wildswimming #adventure #staywild

People of Nepal: At Home

Once school is over, the kids head back home. The younger children can play outside in the fields. Or do schoolwork… The women usually occupy their time with housework. My host father, retired from the army, is a priest. He goes out to spread his wisdom to the community and receives gifts in return. One of the few women with a job with Global Action Nepal laughs on her front veranda. Her smartphone lies next to her. Any child who can get hold of a smartphone delights in takin

Sisters for Sisters

High up in the jungle hills, moist dwellings house the Dalit community. I reach them sweaty from the climb, my boots caked in red mud and supporting a red ant hitchhiker under my t-shirt. My companions, from the Sisters for Sisters project of Global Action Nepal, have cooly trekked up this mountain in flip flops, no sweat. After only a week in the community, we have inspired a door to door campaign to encourage parents to send their kids back to school. We are working with Si

Wild Nepal

Last night, I opened the bedroom door to visit the toilet. I gripped my torchlight ready to face off cockroaches, spiders, mosquitoes, caterpillars, ants or grasshoppers. But, instead, I found a tiny frog leaping repeatedly up at the door. Every day, it seems, I discover some new, bizarre wonder hiding in these remote Nepalese hills. #explore #wildlife #travelwriting #outside #Photography #wanderlust #Wild #Asia #nature #adventure #Nepal

Volunteering in Nepal

Nepal. What can I say about Nepal? First off, it’s beautiful. My dad described it as the most beautiful country he’d visited and I can see why. The hills seem to stretch up to heaven and prayer flags adorn the streets. Whilst Kathmandu is populated with temples, in the countryside, cicadas, frogs and birds shriek all night long. Everything here is so foreign to me. #explore #wildlife #solotravel #abroad #travelwriting #outside #travel #remote #wilderness #adventure #Nepal

MY AMAZONIAN RIVER ADVENTURE

MY AMAZONIAN RIVER ADVENTURE

I had spent my first few days in the jungle at an eco-friendly, uber-fancy tourist lodge several hours upriver from Iquitos and loved every minute of it. The experience of travelling aboard a cargo boat was somewhat different. Gaining passage on board Eduardo VI was fairly easy, although intimidating. I rocked up in a tourist motorcar (what they would term a tuk-tuk in Asia) and found the docks grimy and unfriendly. A man turned to piss against a fence in broad daylight. Toil

In photos: Cargo boat up the Amazon River

Hi there! This is essentially a photo essay to describe the almost indescribable boat trip that I took up the Amazon River. I had so much time to spend gazing at the water and watching the clouds drift by. Hence the many arty, expressive close-ups I took during those four days. Read more about the actual experience here. #villages #explore #wildlife #Amazonjungle #art #selva #solotravel #Amazon #photo #lighteffects #lighting #peru #sky #unusual #river #Photography #backpacker

Top Ten: Best South American Street Art

NO.10: This mural in Uruguay illustrates the long fought over history of its ports, alluding to its colonisation by the Spanish and Portuguese and its subsequent independence in 1825. NO.9: The colourful rooftop of my hostel in Arequipa, Peru. NO.8: By the Rambla riverside walkway in Montevideo, Uruguay. An underwater jungle to liven up the cold, concrete walkway. NO.7: A mural on the wall of my hostel in Huanchaco, Peru. It looks like a modern take on the ancient engravings

Don’t underestimate the shock of culture

How can I write of England when I’ve just been through my most challenging, other-worldly travel adventure yet?! When the plane touched down on English soil after three months of being away I felt a very intense cocktail of emotions. Relief and excitement mingled with a sense of loss, achievement, pride and optimism for the future flooded through me. I just sat and tried to breathe and focus on exactly the sensations running through me at that moment. Better than any high or

La Paz

If I was to try to quantify the point I’ve reached with travel, it would be summed up in this experience. I arrived in Bolivia with no transport or accommodation plans. I had heard from several sources that Uyuni was not the place to spend the night and so I decided to book a bus out of there sharpish. I chose the route to La Paz largely because it is the longest national journey and would take me nicely up until sunrise. Despite the fact that buses in South America are cons

One flamingo and plenty of salt please: Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

‘Don’t stay in Uyuni!,’ everyone told me. ‘It has no charm, there is nothing to do, people only visit to get a tour across the salt flats.’ So, to avoid being stuck overnight in this apparently uninspiring Bolivian town, I decided to catch a three day tour across the border to Bolivia ending in Uyuni. My first days in Bolivia was simply breathtaking. At the border, we piled into dusty jeep with broken seat belts and sped off, manoeuvring around rocks, clouds of dust billowing
